The National Health Service - 1986 - 1997
During 1986 I began to realise that I more work was need to be done on the AIDS crisis and that the place to be to make the greatest change would be the NHS. Added to this Carl (I am afraid that I cannot remember his surname) had been appointed to the first AIDS related post in Oxford Council and David Panter had been appointed to Islington Health Authority - as it then was - as their AIDS Coordinator. This was a job that I had applied for as well as I needed to make a living and I had experience and skills that were needed
I was successful in applying for a job at Paddington and North Kensington Health Authority. This later became Parkside Health Authority.
| It was at this time that Rt. Hon. Normal Fowler MP was the Secretary of State for Health. I had prepared a display of prevention messages that can just be seen in the background. |

| The visit around the hospital culminated in a round table discussion on future plans. The Chair of the Health Authority is on the left of the picture with Normal Fowler, just Mr. then, to his left. Next is seated Prof. Anthony Pinching, Dr. William Harris then Mr. Clive Bath and then me. |

In 1989 I joined South West Thames Regional Health Authority. This Regional Health Authority was absorbed in the 1994 re-organisation and becoming the South Thames ME. This will changed again in April 1999 when London got a Health Authority of its own. As part of my role at South West Thames I was involved with the development of services for those involved with illicit drugs an alcohol. It was in this role that I was invited to attend the opening of a facility run by Turning Point in Soho. It was here that I met HRH Diana Princess of Wales - as she was then. I was to meet her again at a celebration of Turning Point held at Kensington Palace a few weeks later. |
