Accreditation

Q: With the investment for the programme, in terms of time and money, what is the guarantee of success ?

A: As with psychotherapy there is an element of risk in undertaking any programme like this. However, I developed this programme whilst I was Chair of NLPtCA particularly from the comments that I was getting from members about accreditation. Also, a lot of the NLPters I was meeting had little idea about the wider world of psychotherapy. My work at UKCP brought me into contact with many other therapists and thus gave me wider view as to what would be expected. If you fulfil the requirements of the programme then the chances of you gaining a successful accreditation are high. I will let you know if I have any cause for concern about your work as soon as I come to that conclusion. I will also suggested what you need to do to bring you up to the required standard.

I will be quite happy to re-format the programme in order to have the best guarantee of success along another path as the requirements change and/or other pathways open up.

Q: How do I identify what I need to be accredited?

A: You will need to be able to make a judgement between what are your existing skills and experience and how these compare to the requirements laid down by both the UKCP and the NLPtCA or other accrediting member organisation.

We have prepared a check list that we hope will make this job easier. You can download this document here. Its best to complete this first as best you can before you contact us so that you are as clear as you can be about your needs.

Attendance

Q. I have the opportunity to spend some time out of the country or I am busy for some of the time. Is there any way of working around this?

A. The programme will be running again next year and every year if I can get enough participants. If you are away frequently then that is something that I am happy to negotiate. I would like such agreements to be few and far between as I have trained on programmes where almost every weekend brought new participants from a previous year and the balance of the programme was upset. More importantly I was unable to have enough experience of these participants to form any useful relationship from which to be able to write a reference or trainer's report.

Client Hours

Q. How many hours of client contact do I need to be accredited ?

A. According to the NLPtCA's accreditation requirements: "A minimum of 400 hours of supervised client contact hours over THREE years is required. This will include seeing more than one client over a period of at least 25 sessions."
(Para 14 of the accreditation guidelines NLPtCA).

Although 400 hours seems a large number it averages out at about 3 hours a week over the period.

If you do not have any client hours or the hours that you do not have are not supervised then our suggestion is that you offer your services to a local voluntary counselling group. Here you will meet other counsellors and you may get free or low cost supervision.

Clinical Placement

Q: What is the nature of the Clinical Placement ?

A: The clinical placement is a bit of a vague item. The ideal is a week's work in an NHS Mental Health facility. However, that is I think a very long shot and unlikely to happen. I would suggest work through the length of the programme for a voluntary counselling organisation. With a good voluntary organisation they will have training courses and access to either the NHS or GPs and that experience would be acceptable.

You would also get extra supervision that would probably be free as well as exposure to many other therapeutic models. You may also have to explain and perhaps even defend the NLPt way of working and that's always a good experience to have.

NLP Training

Q: Are previous NLP practitioner or master practitioner trainings suitable for recognition for entry on to the UKCP register ?

A: The process for accrediting NLP and NLPt trainings as suitable for UKCP recognition is a new one. Therefore there are many kinds of NLP training of which some are more appropriate than others. NLPtCA state that for their accreditation: "This accreditation is our satisfaction that such courses are of an agreed level of excellence." There are other programmes as well and you will need to check each individual course with the NLPtCA to check its status.

It is well to note here that ANLP accreditation really has no meaning now and this recognition is no longer required.

You will need 520 hours of NLP training. More and more this training will have to show that there is a psychotherapeutic focus of some kind. A suitable Practitioner and Master Practitioner will provide 250 hours of face to face teaching (125 + 125). This leaves some 270 hours (520 - 250). All five modules of the Health Consultancy programme will provide some 229 hours (possibly more if I decide that some modules need extra time) which leaves 41 hours to be gained in other NLP & NLPt trainings.

See paragraph 7 of the NLPtCA accreditation guidelines.

When I did my accreditation, which I gained in 2000, I attended a "Words that change minds" 4 day course and a "Training Trances 2" course of 3 days to make up the hours that I needed. So you can mix and match according to your own specific needs. Its best to check with the NLPtCA that the course or programme that you intend to follow will be acceptable. Supervision and Therapy

Q: What is the cost of supervision and therapy?

A: Supervision and Therapy can vary anywhere from £30 to £60 per hour. Charges may also vary with employment status. Ask around your local area for the going rate.

Q: Do members of NLPtCA offer supervision or therapy at a set rate?

A: There is no NLPtCA set rate that I am aware of.

Q: How many hours of personal therapy do I need to participate in ?

From the NLPtCA guidelines: "Applicants are required to have experienced a minimum of twelve hours of personal therapy using NLPt as the therapeutic model, over the development period of their NLP training. (Change work assigned and included in NLP course work will not count as personal therapy).

Q: Is there any likelihood of training being run away from the capital?

A: I appreciate the travelling and accommodation costs. I am happy to run the course out of London in the future and when I can find a suitable venue.
